TESA (Testicular Sperm Aspiration) &

TESE (Testicular Sperm Extraction)

What Is It?

TESA is performed by using a needle in the testis to aspirate fluid with negative pressure. The success rates for retrieving sperm in TESA is nearly 100% in cases with obstructive azoospermia.

TESE is a surgical biopsy of the testes for identifying focal areas of spermatogenesis in cases of non-obstructive Azoospermia. The success rate for sperm retrieval in TESE is 40-50%, depending on the etiology.

When Is It Indicated?

TESA is done for cases of obstructive azoospermia:

  • Bilateral Congenital Absence of Vas

  • Bilateral Ejaculatory Duct obstruction

TESE is done for non obstructive azoospermia.

What can the patient expect?

Both TESE & TESA are minor, day-care procedures, done under adequate local anaesthesia, and are done on the day of ovum pickup. TESE uses a small incision to retrieve testicular tissue while TESA uses a needle for aspiration. TESA gives excellent results for sperm retrieval, while results of TESE are guarded, depending on the cause, and presence of any genetic abnormalities in the male partner.
