Sperm Donation

What Is It?

Donated sperm (sperm not from your partner), can be used in many types of fertility treatment. The donated sperm is used to fertilise an egg either inside the woman’s body (intrauterine insemination or in the laboratory, in the case of in vitro fertilisation (IVF).

Cryopreserved semen samples are obtained from registered semen banks. The semen sample has been quarantined and screened for HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C.

When Is It Indicated?

It is done when the husband produces no sperms.

What can the patient expect?

It’s a simple procedure where a fine tube or syringe with the donor sperm inside is inserted through the vagina and cervix into the uterus when the woman is ovulating. It can also be used as part of IVF if necessary.
