Oocyte Vitrification - Egg Freezing

What Is It?

The vitrification of oocytes is one of the techniques used in preserving fertility. It allows a woman’s ability to be pregnant to be postponed for as long as she wants. Vitrified oocytes are stored in liquid Nitrogen. Studies have shown a clinical pregnancy rate varying from 5-15% using frozen eggs.

When Is It Indicated?

It can be considered for:

  • Women who want to delay childbearing in order to pursue educational, career or other personal goals.

  • Women diagnosed with cancer.

  • Donor Egg Vitrification

What can the patient expect?

In order to retrieve eggs for freezing, a patient undergoes the same hormone-injection process as in vitro fertilization (see IVF - ICSI for details). The only difference is that following egg retrieval, they are frozen for a period of time before they are thawed, fertilized and transferred to the uterus as embryos.
