Intra-Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)
What Is It?
Intra-Cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is an assisted reproductive technique (ART) used to treat sperm related infertility problems. It is a part of most IVF cycles. The egg is held, and injected with a sperm with the help of a machine called micro-manipulator.

When Is It Indicated?
ICSI is used to treat severe male infertility, as when little or no sperms are ejaculated in the semen. Immature sperms collected from the testicles usually can't move about and are used through ICSI to fertilize an egg.
It is done as a part of most IVF cycles to increase the rates of fertilization and pregnancy.

What can the patient expect?
The steps vary from one patient to the other but generally consist of the following steps:
-
Hormone injections are administered for ovarian stimulation. The medication prescribed and response is monitored closely both clinically and by blood tests.
-
36 hours prior to egg collection, on the final day of ovarian stimulation, an hCG or GnRH agonist trigger injection is given to cause Ovulation.
-
Egg collection is conducted under sedation or a mild general anaesthesia.
-
ICSI is done 2 hours after egg collection.
-
Based on the quality and available number of embryos, they are transferred 2-5 days after egg collection.
-
A blood test to evaluate β-hCG levels is performed at 14/15 days after embryo transfer to determine pregnancy.
